PN urges urgent reforms after Kelana Jaya Line breakdowns disrupt commuters and worsen traffic congestion.

PETALING JAYA: Perikatan Nasional (PN) has raised alarm over repeated disruptions on the Kelana Jaya LRT line, warning that the breakdowns are having a major impact on the daily routines of Klang Valley commuters.

In a statement, today, PN transport portfolio head Khairil Nizam Khirudin (pic) said the incidents are not isolated but systemic, affecting one of the region’s most critical urban rail corridors.

“The Kelana Jaya Line stretches nearly 46km with 37 stations, carrying hundreds of thousands of passengers each weekday. When a line of this scale experiences repeated failures, the consequences extend far beyond temporary delays. It disrupts work schedules, school attendance, and business operations, while placing additional stress on commuters,” he said.

Khairil cautioned that persistent service interruptions are driving commuters back to private vehicles, worsening traffic congestion across the city.

The opposition coalition outlined four urgent measures:

  1. Immediate funding to upgrade infrastructure, control systems, and ageing components.
  2. A comprehensive investigation by the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) into root causes, including maintenance practices.
  3. Firm action against negligence or failures, including disciplinary measures or penalties.
  4. A long-term recovery plan, with more train cars, improved service frequency, and stronger technical support.

PN stressed that reliable public transport is a necessity, not a luxury, and warned that continued disruptions erode public confidence in Malaysia’s transport system.

“If this issue is not addressed comprehensively, efforts to encourage a shift towards public transport will continue to suffer,” the coalition said, urging the Madani government to act swiftly and transparently.
