Housing Ministry reaffirms commitment to media freedom while clarifying minister’s approach to questions during press conference.

PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Housing and Local Government has reiterated its commitment to always respect media freedom and appreciate the important role of media practitioners in delivering accurate information.

KPKT expressed appreciation for the contribution of local and international media through their coverage and respects journalists’ freedom to ask questions during press conferences.

The ministry clarified that the party answering questions should also have space to respond to each question posed.

Prudent reprimands to ensure factual accuracy and mutual understanding represent methods of togetherness to achieve government programme objectives.

The press conference launched the Lighting Innovation Project Towards Urban Sustainability for Visit Malaysia 2026 to strengthen tourism promotion efforts.

This initiative aims to attract international tourists to unique and iconic attractions, especially in the capital city.

The entire press conference by Minister Nga Kor Ming was conducted in Bahasa Melayu to uphold the national language’s dignity.

Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Maimunah Mohd Sharif also delivered her speech entirely in Bahasa Melayu during the event.

On October 29, Housing Minister Nga Kor Meng was reported to have threatened a journalist who asked about using English for the I LITE U tourism theme.

The National Union of Journalists Malaysia and Gerakan Media Merdeka condemned the minister’s actions in statements issued yesterday.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil stated today that journalists have the right to ask any questions while performing their duties.

Fahmi emphasized the importance of openness and mutual respect between media and government during his statement.

He informed that the matter had been discussed during the Cabinet meeting earlier today. – Bernama
