Kuala Lumpur JPJ issued 2,398 summonses and seized 14 vehicles in overloaded commercial vehicle operations, targeting high-risk cargo sectors
KUALA LUMPUR: The Kuala Lumpur Road Transport Department issued 2,398 summonses to 939 vehicles during its ‘War on Overloaded Commercial Vehicles’ operations around the federal capital since October 14.
Fourteen vehicles were confiscated for offences including carrying excessive loads and flouting service level requirements.
Confiscated vehicles included six driven by individuals from Indonesia and India and eight driven by Malaysians.
Enforcement actions involved issuing summonses to drivers and vehicle owners under the Land Public Transport Act 2010 and the Road Transport Act 1987.
The operation aims to ensure road safety and cultivate compliance with traffic rules among commercial vehicle operators until December 31.
Focus areas are hotspots for commercial vehicles carrying excessive loads.
High-risk cargo types include stones, sand, soil, silica, coal, iron, oil palm, and logs.
Most vehicles involved are in the quarry, port, and heavy industry sectors.
The Kuala Lumpur JPJ has so far inspected 5,967 vehicles during the operation.
Officers faced challenges including drivers refusing to cooperate with various excuses.
Some drivers refused to send their vehicles for weighing by claiming vehicle damage.
Such obstructive actions can be prosecuted under Section 234 of the Land Public Transport Act 2010.
The offence carries a fine not exceeding 200,000 ringgit or imprisonment not exceeding two years, or both. – Bernama
