Shah Alam City Council will expand its Sukan Rakyat programme to Selangor’s district level to revive traditional sports, with potential palace finals.
SHAH ALAM: The Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) plans to expand its Sukan Rakyat programme to the district level across Selangor to revive traditional sports.
Mayor Datuk Mohd Fauzi Mohd Yatim announced the initiative following strong public response at today’s event held at Dataran Kemerdekaan Shah Alam.
“The response today was very encouraging and we received a positive reaction from all parties, including the Raja Muda of Selangor,” he told reporters.
Tengku Amir Shah and his consort Datin Paduka Seri Afzaa Fadini Abdul Aziz attended the programme organised alongside the Royal Wedding Appreciation ceremony.
Mohd Fauzi revealed the Raja Muda supported holding the games at district level during discussions with palace officials.
“We have also discussed with the palace about holding the Games in a more orderly manner, including holding a league for several traditional sports,” he said.
The proposed league could feature traditional sports like football played while wearing kain pelekat.
Winners from district-level competitions might advance to finals held at the palace grounds as recognition of sporting heritage.
“If the proposal is accepted, it will be a huge honour to the winners and the traditional sport itself,” Mohd Fauzi added.
The mayor will discuss the proposal with state Rural Development, Unity and Consumer Committee chairman Datuk Rizam Ismail and other relevant parties.
Today’s event attracted over 1,500 spectators comprising department staff, local communities and district representatives.
Mohd Fauzi credited good weather and cooperation from all parties for the successful organisation.
The Sukan Rakyat programme featured traditional games including congkak, galah panjang, batu seremban and sepak raga. – Bernama
