Parliament champions women’s leadership and inclusive governance

Malaysia’s Parliament advances women’s representation through bipartisan committees and diplomatic engagement with women ambassadors.

KUALA LUMPUR: Parliament continues to champion women’s representation and inclusive decision-making, recognising diplomacy as vital for advancing dialogue and cooperation.

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul stated that governance is most effective when every voice is heard.

“In recent years, Parliament has introduced a series of reforms, including the establishment of 10 bipartisan parliamentary select committees,” he said during a networking lunch with Women Heads of Mission in Malaysia.

Johari emphasised that these committees cover crucial areas including women, health, human rights, and international relations.

He stressed that meaningful participation from all society segments forms the cornerstone of a robust parliamentary system.

The event featured Romanian Ambassador to Malaysia Nineta Barbulescu, who serves as WOHOMY coordinator.

Also present were Special Select Committee chairman Yeo Bee Yin alongside women MPs, ambassadors, and organisational leaders.

Johari highlighted that women’s leadership remains essential for equality and national progress.

“Today’s programme provides a focused platform to discuss how to empower women, protect children, and create gender-responsive policies,” he added.

He commended Yeo and her committee for their leadership in promoting these critical issues.

Their efforts directly contribute to Malaysia’s Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those focused on gender equality.

The networking session facilitated dialogue on policies and best practices for strengthening gender-responsive approaches.

Interactive activities including the ‘Diplomatic Connections: Business Card Challenge’ fostered closer relationships among women leaders.

This engagement occurred in a friendly and informal setting designed to build connections. – Bernama
