Hosts share shock as some children demand duit Raya rudely, highlighting changing manners and parenting today

RECEIVING money packets as children during Raya was never about the money itself. It was the small joy of collecting many notes, even if all were just RM1.

Times have changed, and so have the children of this generation. In a Threads post, user @mhd.fnnnn recounted an incident at his family’s Raya open house that left him stunned.

He explained that some guests, whom he did not know, had come over for Raya.

“I gave RM2 to some kids who came to my house for Raya since I didn’t know them, and I didn’t know their parents either. One of the kids actually returned the RM2 I gave and even handed me another RM1, saying, ‘Here, take it so you can make it a full packet’,” he wrote.

Shocked by the child’s behaviour, he questioned whether children today receive RM5 or RM10 notes at open houses. He also described the child’s actions as rude.

@Mhd.fnnnn is not alone in this kind of situation. Nadia shared a similar experience from the first day of Raya at her in-laws’ house.

Some children arrived for the open house but were told to wait, as there were no ice cubes for the drinks at that moment and other guests were present.

One child reportedly shouted, “No ice? Whatever, we just want duit Raya!” Nadia was taken aback by the impolite tone. She responded, “Right then, if you’re only here for duit Raya, the house is closed. Sorry!”

Zahirah noted that many children today receive RM5 or RM10 notes, leaving smaller blue notes seemingly worthless in their eyes.

Anipe added that parents should spend less time scrolling social media and more time monitoring their children’s behaviour, as they play a key role in raising well-mannered individuals, especially when interacting with others.

“Back in our day, before going to someone’s house for Raya, we had to be schooled by our parents. We were scared even if we spilled a little water, let alone being rude,” he reflected, recalling the strict parenting of the past.
