Malaysia’s medicine supply stable amid Middle East conflict

Health Ministry confirms stable medicine supply despite Middle East conflict.

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s medicine supply remains stable and well-controlled despite the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, the Health Ministry said.

In a statement today, the ministry said the short-term impact of the conflict on the country’s pharmaceutical supply chain is minimal based on current assessments.

“Stock levels at government health facilities are maintained between one and three months, depending on usage needs.

“These are further supported by buffer stocks of up to two months held at the concession company level for medicines distributed through logistics agreements,” said in the statement.

The ministry added that supply levels are being continuously monitored through existing mechanisms, including a reporting system managed by the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA).

As of March 22, there has been no upward trend in reports of supply disruptions from Product Registration Holders (PRH).

Feedback from the local pharmaceutical industry indicates that domestic manufacturers currently hold raw material stocks sufficient for up to three months, while finished product supplies can last around two months.

Importers are also closely monitoring their respective supply chains to ensure continuity.

The ministry said it will continue to keep a close watch on developments in the Middle East and is prepared to take proactive measures if needed.

This includes the establishment of a task force comprising industry players and relevant stakeholders to ensure continued access to essential medicines.

Particular focus will be given to medicines listed under Malaysia’s National Essential Medicines List (NEML), as part of efforts to safeguard public health and maintain supply security.
