Malaysia rises to 13th in global peace index on lower crime

Malaysia climbs four spots to rank 13th globally for peace, driven by a 6.4% drop in index crime and enhanced border security operations.

KUALA LUMPUR: MALAYSIA’S improved ranking in the Global Peace Index 2025 is linked to a significant reduction in crime and heightened security operations.

Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said the country rose four places to 13th globally due to a 6.4% decline in index crime.

He credited coordinated efforts by enforcement agencies under the Home Ministry for the achievement.

“Although there were several incidents and events that drew attention during the study period from March 2025 to March 2026, the overall security level in this blessed nation remains good and under control,” Mohd Khalid said.

He was speaking at the 219th Police Day Commemoration at the Police Training Centre (PULAPOL).

The ranking also places Malaysia as the second most peaceful nation in Southeast Asia.

Mohd Khalid highlighted ongoing challenges to keep the force relevant and effective.

He cited past attacks on police stations in Selangor and Johor as evidence that some parties remain bold enough to challenge national authority.

Such acts constitute an affront to enforcement institutions, he stressed.

The IGP emphasised the need to upgrade infrastructure at critical premises and amend laws to align with current needs.

He also thanked the government for its continued support for police welfare.

This includes a total allocation of RM12.063 billion for the force this year.

An additional RM200 million was allocated to expand IT facilities at police stations and residential quarters nationwide.

Police Day is celebrated annually on March 25 to commemorate the force’s establishment in 1807.
