A man in his 30s is in custody after a car struck pedestrians in Derby, leaving seven with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

DERBY: Seven people sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries after a car was driven into pedestrians in the English city of Derby on Saturday night.

Derbyshire Police confirmed a man in his 30s was arrested shortly after the incident, which occurred at approximately 9:30 pm local time.

The suspect was detained on suspicion of attempted murder, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent, and dangerous driving.

Authorities stated the investigation into the circumstances and motives is ongoing, with officers keeping an open mind.

The vehicle involved was a black Suzuki Swift, which struck the pedestrians in an area about 40 miles north of Birmingham.

All seven casualties were treated at the scene by ambulance crews before being transported to Royal Derby Hospital and Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham.

Derbyshire police explicitly confirmed that, contrary to online speculation, no one died as a result of the incident.

The force had earlier stated it did not believe there was any ongoing risk to the wider public.

Derby North MP Catherine Atkinson said she was “deeply shocked” by the event, adding that her thoughts were with those injured.

“I’m grateful to our emergency services,” she said in a social media post, urging the public to follow police advice and avoid the area.
