Harry Kane believes winning major trophies like Champions League and World Cup is essential for Ballon d’Or success, not just scoring goals
HARRY KANE acknowledges his Ballon d’Or aspirations depend more on trophy collection than goal-scoring records this season.
The England and Bayern Munich striker is enjoying arguably his best career campaign with 23 goals in 17 club appearances.
Bayern remain unbeaten and lead both the Bundesliga and Champions League group stage standings.
Kane has also netted three goals in four England appearances, including two in October’s 5-0 victory over Latvia that secured World Cup qualification.
“I could score 100 goals this season, but if I don’t win the Champions League or World Cup, you’re probably not going to win the Ballon d’Or,” Kane told reporters.
He emphasised this principle applies equally to competitors like Erling Haaland and all elite players.
“We’re in great shape at Bayern Munich so that maybe makes the odds more in my favour,” Kane added.
The striker expressed hope that success with both club and country would position him as a serious Ballon d’Or contender.
Although England have already qualified for the World Cup, Kane stressed the importance of current matches against Serbia and Albania for tournament preparation.
He highlighted defender Marc Guehi’s commitment, attending camp meetings despite injury before England’s 2-0 victory over Serbia.
“Representing your country is the biggest honour,” Kane said regarding building team culture.
The captain believes England are “trending in the right direction” both on and off the pitch.
Kane concluded that the national team is “in a really good place” heading into the new year. – Reuters
