PM to open new Kota Bharu airport terminal tomorrow

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will inaugurate the upgraded Sultan Ismail Petra Airport terminal, boosting Kelantan’s capacity to four million passengers annually.

KOTA BHARU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is set to officiate the new terminal of the Sultan Ismail Petra Airport (LTSIP) tomorrow, marking a major upgrade to Kelantan’s air transport infrastructure.

The ceremony, scheduled for 10 am, is expected to signal a significant boost to the state’s connectivity and economic mobility.

Among those expected to attend are Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar and Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud.

The new terminal features more than 20 check-in counters, a multi-storey car park, dedicated taxi lanes, a fire and rescue station, expanded aircraft parking bays and a cashless operating system aimed at improving efficiency and passenger comfort.

The RM440 million expansion project is expected to raise the airport’s capacity to four million passengers annually, up from 1.5 million previously.

The terminal has also been enlarged from 12,000 to 36,000 square metres, with a redesigned layout separating departure halls on the upper level and arrival areas below to ease congestion.

Aircraft parking bays have increased to 11 from five, while parking capacity has expanded to about 1,300 lots, compared with 350 previously. These improvements are expected to ease passenger drop-off and pick-up, especially during peak periods such as Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

In addition to the launch, Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, is scheduled to attend the Pasir Puteh District Development Meeting at noon, followed by a visit to Masjid Gong Chapa and a meet-and-greet session.

In the afternoon, he is also scheduled to open the Kelantan PKR Mini Convention.
