Guardiola optimistic on Rodri injury, midfielder to miss Burnley clash

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola expects Rodri to return soon from a groin injury, but confirms the midfielder will miss Wednesday’s Premier League match

PEP Guardiola has eased fears that Rodri could miss the rest of Manchester City’s Premier League campaign. The manager confirmed the influential midfielder will, however, sit out Wednesday’s trip to face Burnley.

Rodri was forced off late in City’s critical 2-1 win over Arsenal on Sunday with a groin problem. The 2024 Ballon d’Or winner has been instrumental in City’s surge back into the title race this season.

“I think for tomorrow he will not be ready,” Guardiola said at his pre-match press conference. “We’ll see for next games, the semi-final against Southampton or against Everton.”

City then have a 12-day break from league action after the Burnley fixture. This period includes an FA Cup semi-final against Southampton before they resume their title bid at Everton.

Guardiola highlighted the dominant midfield partnership Rodri has formed with Bernardo Silva. He said both are “experienced” players with “huge special personality” who were “exceptional” against Arsenal.

Even with a win at Turf Moor, City would only draw level on points with Arsenal. Both title rivals have five games remaining in a tense run-in.

Guardiola acknowledged his side’s demanding calendar, with visits to Everton and Bournemouth still to come. “Both teams know we cannot lose or drop points,” he said.

The manager is aiming to win a seventh league title in nine seasons with Manchester City. Momentum is currently with his side following their victory over the Gunners.
