Twelve visually impaired University of Malaya students will join an international mobility programme in Jakarta, supported by a RM10,000 grant.

KUALA LUMPUR: Twelve visually impaired students from the University of Malaya will participate in an international mobility programme in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The programme is part of the International and Inclusive Learning for Diverse Excellence (INCLUDE) initiative.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir announced the students will undergo the programme at Universitas Multimedia Nusantara. He said it strengthens the country’s inclusive education agenda.

“This is among the approaches we emphasise at the Ministry of Higher Education in ensuring truly inclusive, fair access to higher education,” he said in a Facebook post.

He added the programme opens global exposure opportunities to all students regardless of background or limitations.

Zambry also announced a RM10,000 contribution from Yayasan Perkasa Siswa to facilitate the programme and ease the students’ needs.

He said the initiative aligns with the Prime Minister’s announcement on tuition fee exemptions for students with disabilities. The exemptions apply to public universities, polytechnics and community colleges.

This move is expected to benefit about 3,000 students with disabilities nationwide.

It forms part of implementing the Malaysia Higher Education Blueprint (2026–2035) to strengthen inclusive education.

Zambry expressed his appreciation for the students’ spirit during an engagement session. He also had the opportunity to learn the basics of Braille from them.
