Former US President Donald Trump says Iran cancelled plans to execute eight women after his personal request, a claim Tehran denies.
WASHINGTON: Former US President Donald Trump claimed Iran has halted alleged plans to execute eight women arrested during anti-government protests.
He stated this followed his personal request for their release.
“I very much appreciate that Iran, and its leaders, respected my request, as President of the United States, and terminated the planned execution,” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform. Iranian authorities have denied any such execution plans existed.
Trump had earlier reposted an activist’s claim that eight women faced execution by hanging. That social media post did not name the women but included their photographs.
He suggested that releasing the women could benefit Iran in ongoing negotiations. The fate of US-Iran talks hosted by Pakistan remains unclear following the collapse of a previous round.
Rights groups report at least one woman arrested over January protests has received a death sentence. They state at least one more faces charges carrying the death penalty.
These groups accuse the Islamic republic of using capital punishment to instill fear and of increasing executions of political prisoners. This is alleged to be against the backdrop of the war involving the United States and Israel.
