Anthony Loke criticises Ewon Benedick’s resignation as political theatre, revealing he skipped the crucial Cabinet meeting on Sabah’s 40% revenue rights.
KOTA KINABALU: DAP Secretary-General Anthony Loke has dismissed former minister Datuk Ewon Benedick’s resignation over Sabah’s 40% revenue entitlement as “playing to the gallery” rather than genuine bravery.
Loke revealed the Federal Cabinet held a special meeting on November 11 specifically to address the 40% issue, demonstrating its importance.
“The Cabinet reached a consensus not to appeal the court’s ruling on Sabah’s 40% rights,” he stated.
However, the government agreed to appeal specific grounds in the judgment that could imply federal power misuse since 1974.
Loke explained that challenging this finding was necessary to avoid admitting criminal implications for past administrations.
He criticised Ewon for repeatedly alleging the Cabinet ignored Sabah’s views while failing to attend the crucial meeting.
“If he is so brave, why didn’t he come to Cabinet and confront the Attorney General?” Loke questioned.
He noted Ewon’s resignation announced on November 8 isn’t official yet, with the minister currently on leave until it takes effect in December.
Loke affirmed DAP and the federal government remain committed to actualising Sabah’s 40% entitlement through proper governance and legal processes.
“As Cabinet ministers, we have a duty to safeguard the unity of the Federation,” he added.
He warned that appealing the entitlement could be exploited to stir anti-federal sentiment and influence Sabah voters.
“DAP Sabah has always supported Sabah’s 40% entitlement and was the first political group to take legal action,” Loke emphasised. – Bernama
