Malaysia probes army personnel over trooper injury

Police investigate two military personnel linked to trooper Abdul Hamid Talib’s injury, says defence minister Mohamed Khaled

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) has fully handed over the investigation process involving two military personnel believed to be linked to the injury of Trooper Abdul Hamid Talib to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).

In a statement today, Defence Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the case is now under the attention of the police for appropriate further action.

According to him, the Malaysian Army had also conducted an internal investigation and its findings would be submitted in the near future.

“Appropriate action against the personnel involved would be determined based on the outcome of the investigation,” he said.

He said MINDEF continued to closely monitor the condition of the victim, who is currently undergoing rehabilitation treatment at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (PPUM).

“The Ministry of Defence is committed to ensure that this case is handled transparently, fairly and in accordance with the law,” said Mohamed Khaled.

Earlier, Bernama reported that Abdul Hamid’s family had urged the government to provide an explanation and conduct a thorough investigation into the severe injuries suffered by the 25-year-old member of the 22nd Commando Regiment’s Grup Gerak Khas (GGK), while at Kem Iskandar in Mersing.

Adviser to Lawyers for Liberty (LFL) N. Surendran, who is also the family’s spokesperson, said they had yet to receive a reasonable explanation regarding the cause of Abdul Hamid’s severe injuries, which had left him in a vegetative state.

He said the victim was previously in good health, but had been reported to sustain serious injuries while at the camp on March 11.
