IWK begins phased sewerage pipe replacement in George Town

Indah Water Konsortium starts phased replacement of ageing sewerage pipes in George Town, prioritising critical areas identified through risk assessments and CCTV inspections.

GEORGE TOWN: Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) is implementing a phased plan to replace and upgrade ageing sewerage pipes in George Town.

State Infrastructure, Transport, and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said this ensures decades-old sewerage assets continue functioning efficiently and safely.

The George Town Regional Sewage Treatment Plant processes sewage from George Town and surrounding areas.

IWK conducts asset condition assessments using risk management to identify pipes at risk of structural failure.

Maintenance and restoration work occurs in critical areas identified through CCTV inspections and performance reports.

Zairil responded to Teh Lai Heng’s query about pipe replacement plans during the State Legislative Assembly sitting.

IWK remains committed to phased asset replacement and upgrades prioritised by technical assessments.

The programme depends on funding approval to maintain system resilience and national standards.
