A Chinese tourist short on Ringgit receives a free nasi lemak from a Malaysian family during a payment mix-up.
A Chinese tourist’s first taste of Malaysia’s beloved nasi lemak became an unexpected reminder of local kindness when a Malaysian family stepped in to assist him during a moment of confusion over payment.
In a video shared by TikTok user @mamaadamialuth, the tourist approached the uploader’s young daughter to ask for the price of the nasi lemak.
The girl, who is fluent in Mandarin, informed him that the dish cost RM15.
Wanting to confirm the amount, the man quickly converted it on his phone, estimating the price to be 25 yuan, before attempting to pay with a 100 yuan note (approx. RM58.46).
However, the vendor hesitated to accept the large foreign note, politely asking if the tourist had smaller ringgit denominations.
As the situation grew visibly confusing, especially since the tourist appeared to only have yuan on hand, a nearby customer decided to step forward.
“It’s okay, I’ll pay for you. Just take it as me treating you.”
The tourist initially declined the offer, but the family insisted on helping. After they paid for his meal, the man tried to return the kindness by offering 25 yuan from his wallet as a token of gratitude.
According to the video’s caption, although the daughter spoke Mandarin, she struggled slightly with the tourist’s accent at first, adding to the confusion.
Still, what began as a simple misunderstanding soon blossomed into a heartwarming exchange — one that perfectly captured the warmth and generosity Malaysians often extend to visitors.
