Malaysian shuttlers advance in four categories at Australian Open

Four Malaysian pairs and singles players progress to second round of 2025 Australian Open with convincing victories in Sydney

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian shuttlers made strong progress across four categories in the opening round of the 2025 Australian Open badminton championships.

Mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei secured their second-round spot with a 21-19, 21-9 victory over compatriots Wong Tien Ci and Lim Chiew Sien.

The winning duo will next face Taiwanese representatives Liu Kuang Heng and Jheng Yu Chieh.

Men’s doubles pair Wan Arif Wan Junaidi and Yap Roy King dominated their Australian opponents Phillip Halim and Landon Hosea Kurniawan 21-8, 21-11.

They advance to meet professional doubles combination Goh V Shem and Choi Sol Gyu.

National women’s singles player Wong Ling Ching delivered a commanding performance against Australia’s Amy Wang, winning 21-10, 21-11.

Ling Ching will face Canadian player Michelle Li in the next round.

Men’s singles competitor Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin defeated fellow Malaysian Eogene Ewe 21-15, 21-12.

Aidil Sholeh progresses to meet Japanese player Yushi Tanaka in the second round.

Other Malaysian players faced tougher challenges in their opening matches.

Women’s singles player K. Letshanaa fell to Thailand’s Supanida Katethong in a hard-fought 21-18, 16-21, 21-18 encounter.

Mixed doubles pair Jimmy Wong and Lai Pei Jing lost to Indonesia’s Jafar Hidayatullah and Felisha Alberta Nathaniel Pasaribu 21-16, 21-18.

The tournament continues with second-round matches at Sydney Olympic Park. – Bernama
