Malaysia reaffirms commitment to inclusive digital future at global conference

Malaysia seeks re-election to ITU Council, promoting digital inclusion as a fundamental right and showcasing award-winning NADI project

BAKU: Malaysia has reaffirmed its commitment to shaping global dialogue toward a more inclusive digital future at the World Telecommunication Development Conference 2025.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil stated that Malaysia’s vision of “Inclusivity for an Equitable Future” reflects this commitment, emphasising that digital inclusion is a right rather than a privilege.

“Whether through digital-skills programmes, accessible infrastructure, or community-based innovation, we are committed to building a future where no one is left behind,” he said during Malaysia’s lunch reception at the conference.

Fahmi described the event as more than a shared meal but a celebration of collective progress in advancing digital inclusion and fostering innovation.

“Together, we continue to prove that when nations collaborate, connectivity becomes a catalyst for opportunity and progress,” he added.

The minister announced Malaysia’s candidature for re-election to the International Telecommunication Union Council for the 2027–2030 term.

“Guided by our theme Inclusivity for an Equitable Future, Malaysia humbly seeks the valuable support of all member states to continue contributing meaningfully to ITU’s mission,” Fahmi stated.

ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin commended Malaysia’s digital future policy, emphasising universal connectivity, digital trust, and online safety.

“Minister Fahmi made it very clear that to build a digital future where everyone is connected, included and safe anywhere, that is the vision we have to be striving for,” she said.

Bogdan-Martin specifically praised MCMC’s NADI Digital Inclusive Project, which won the World Summit on the Information Society Award 2025 in July.

She noted the project’s success in connecting Malaysia’s remote areas with high-speed internet and digital skills training opportunities.

The event was attended by ITU Telecommunication Development Bureau director Dr Cosmas Luckyson Zavazava and senior Malaysian officials including Tan Sri Mohd Annuar Zaini and Datuk Zurkarnain Mohd Yasin. – Bernama
