Mykad use under SKDS curbs subsidised fuel leakages

The use of MyKad under SKDS has successfully reduced subsidised fuel leakages, says Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali.

PUTRAJAYA: The implementation of targeted fuel subsidies through the use of MyKad under the Subsidised Diesel Control System (SKDS) has successfully reduced leakages of subsidised fuel, although several aspects still require further improvement.

Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said the mechanism serves as a risk-management measure to ensure that subsidies are channelled to the intended and eligible groups while reducing the misuse of subsidised fuel.

“Although it may not yet be able to eliminate leakages entirely and there is still some room for leakages to occur, implementation through the use of MyKad and SKDS represents a form of risk-management mechanism that allows us to narrow the opportunities for leakages,” he said at a press conference here today.

Citing statistics from Ops Tiris 4.0, Armizan said leakages involving subsidised fuel remain a challenge for the government, particularly in Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan.

He said that throughout the integrated enforcement operation, which has been conducted from March 16 until yesterday, a total of 71,601 inspections and enforcement operations were carried out through cooperation among various enforcement agencies.

“Of that total, 869 cases were detected nationwide, with 554 cases involving fuel-related offences. Of those 554 fuel-related cases, 291 cases involved incidents in Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan,” he said.

Armizan said that while leakages continue to occur in Peninsular Malaysia through various methods employed by irresponsible parties, the implementation of the targeted subsidy system has significantly assisted the government in managing risks and closing off a substantial portion of existing leakage channels.
