Floods hit Perlis as evacuee numbers rise in three states

Perlis becomes latest flood-hit state with 200 victims, while Kelantan, Kedah and Terengganu see rising evacuee numbers amid worsening situation

KUALA LUMPUR: Perlis has become the latest state affected by floods as evacuee numbers continue to rise in Kelantan, Kedah and Terengganu.

More than 200 victims from Padang Besar district have been placed at three schools in Perlis.

State Civil Defence Force director Lt Col (PA) Mohd Izaimi Md Daud said six areas were inundated following continuous rain since yesterday.

“Water levels began rising in those areas at about 6 am,” he told Bernama today.

The Perlis APM will continue monitoring the flood situation from time to time.

In Kelantan, flood victims have increased to 5,463 people from 2,047 families as of this evening.

They are being housed at 26 relief centres across Kota Bharu, Tumpat, Bachok and Pasir Puteh districts.

Sungai Melor at Melor Bridge has reached 7.46 metres, exceeding the 7-metre alert level.

Kedah recorded 356 victims from 106 families as of 3 pm, up from 225 people this morning.

All victims from Kulim district were evacuated to three relief centres.

They are from nine villages including Kampung Siam and Kampung Bukit Sarang Ayam.

Terengganu’s flood victims surged to 531 people from 146 families by 3 pm.

Besut became the second affected district with 244 victims at two schools.

Kuala Nerus recorded 287 victims sheltering at Masjid Pulau Redang.

Meanwhile, flood conditions in Hat Yai, Thailand are improving with water levels receding.

Malaysia’s Consul-General in Songkhla said floodwaters have dropped from chest to knee level.

“Food assistance and evacuation efforts are being carried out in coordination with local authorities,” Ahmad Fahmi Ahmad Sarkawi told Bernama.

The Consulate urged stranded Malaysians to wait at their hotels for evacuation assistance.

Some 4,000 Malaysians in Hat Yai were affected by floods but all have been reported safe. – Bernama
