KUALA LUMPUR: Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Ltd (HKEX) has added Bursa Malaysia as a Recognised Stock Exchange (RSE), allowing companies listed on Bursa Malaysia’s Main Market to apply for a secondary listing in Hong Kong.
The recognition makes Bursa Malaysia the 21st exchange across 19 countries to receive RSE status from HKEX and raises the number of recognised Southeast Asian exchanges to four, alongside the Indonesia Stock Exchange, Singapore Exchange and the Stock Exchange of Thailand.
HKEX said the move builds on the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with Bursa Malaysia earlier this year to strengthen market connectivity and enhance cross-border opportunities for issuers and investors.
The announcement coincides with a separate MoU signed between the Securities Commission Malaysia and Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission to expand mutual market access.
HKEX CEO Bonnie Y Chan said the recognition reinforces both exchanges’ commitment to enhancing regional connectivity and expanding access to capital across Asia.
“We warmly welcome Bursa Malaysia to HKEX’s list of Recognised Stock Exchanges. This recognition reinforces the shared commitment between HKEX and Bursa Malaysia to enhancing regional connectivity and expanding access to capital across Asia.”
“Malaysia is one of Southeast Asia’s most dynamic and internationally connected economies, while Hong Kong serves as Asia’s premier international financial centre and gateway to opportunities on the Chinese Mainland.”
“By creating more efficient pathways for issuers and investors, we are helping to strengthen the flow of capital, ideas and opportunities between our two markets,” she said in a statement.
Bursa Malaysia CEO Datuk Fad’l Mohamed said the recognition creates new opportunities for Malaysian listed companies to broaden their international investor reach and access new sources of capital through a secondary listing in Hong Kong.
“This recognition marks an important step in the collaboration between Bursa Malaysia and HKEX following the MOU signed earlier this year and reflects confidence in Malaysia’s regulatory standards, market infrastructure and governance framework.”
“It also reinforces our shared commitment to strengthening ties between our markets and advancing regional connectivity,” he added.
