The 2026 NYCC report integrates youth views on climate change, reflecting government and UNICEF commitment to empower young people.
KUALA LUMPUR: The 2026 National Youth Climate Change (NYCC) Report, titled “Nurture the Youth, Create the Change”, launched today, integrates the views of young people through an inclusive approach to tackling climate challenges.
Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry (NRES) secretary-general Datuk Anis Rizana Mohd Zainudin said the report also outlined the impact of climate change on the economy, ecosystems and public well-being.
She said the report reflected the continued commitment of the Malaysian government and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to empower young people as key strategic partners in advancing the country’s climate action agenda.
“Climate change is no longer a long-term environmental issue or merely a concern for future generations. It is a present-day reality.”
“On behalf of NRES, we believe that young people are not merely beneficiaries of climate policies, but also important strategic partners in shaping more effective solutions to build a more resilient and low-carbon Malaysia together,” she said when officiating the launch at The Godown Arts Centre here today.
The programme, organised in collaboration with UNICEF Malaysia, was attended by youth representatives, civil society organisations and various stakeholders, reflecting a whole-of-society approach to addressing climate challenges.
Anis Rizana added that the country’s climate action commitments were on a clear trajectory in line with the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) 3.0, under which Malaysia targeted its greenhouse gas emissions to peak between 2029 and 2034.
This would be followed by an absolute emissions reduction of between 15 million and 30 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2035, before achieving the nation’s net-zero emissions aspiration by 2050.
