Penang Fire Department confirms Komtar facility operator complied with safety requirements after teen’s fall, no stop order issued.
GEORGE TOWN: An inspection by the Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) has confirmed that the facility operator at Komtar here complied with all safety requirements following an incident in which a teenager recently fell from the building.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said that with JBPM’s confirmation, no stop order was issued and operations at the facility can continue.
“The Fire and Rescue Department has confirmed that the operating company has complied with all safety elements and is permitted to continue operating.
“The management also sent me a note stating that after this incident, they issued a memo to all staff to pay attention to operations, crowd control at the facility and remain vigilant at all times,” he told reporters today.
Chow spoke after an official visit to the Mi Equipment factory in the Bayan Lepas Industrial Zone. Also present was InvestPenang chief executive officer Datuk Seri Loo Lee Lian.
Chow said he could not comment further on the presence of closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage at the scene but confirmed his office received part of the recording related to the incident.
“I cannot comment on the location (whether the specific area has CCTV installed), (but) I was sent a section of the CCTV footage regarding the incident,” he said.
Last Friday, an 18-year-old male was found dead after allegedly falling from the 68th floor of the Komtar building. Police received information from the public at 4.05pm.
Northeast District police chief ACP Abdul Rozak Muhammad was reported as saying that an investigation at the scene revealed the victim was a local 18-year-old male from the Macallum area, and he was found fully clothed on the roof of the sixth level of the building.
The victim suffered severe head injuries and serious wounds to nearly his entire body due to the fall. Investigations found no signs of foul play. The body was sent to the Penang Hospital Forensic Department for autopsy. The case is classified as sudden death, and investigations are ongoing.
