Police in Sabah and Terengganu investigate two newborn baby cases: one dead, one abandoned alive, seeking public help.
PENAMPANG: Police are investigating two separate incidents involving newborn babies in Sabah and Terengganu, with authorities appealing for public assistance to trace those responsible.
In Sabah, police have launched an investigation after the body of a baby was discovered at Kampung Goliga Kolopis here early today.
Penampang District Police chief Supt Sammy Newton said the district police headquarters received a report on the incident at 1.52am.
Preliminary investigations found that the body, believed to be that of a premature infant, was discovered near the complainant’s house before it was taken to the Forensic Department of Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu for a post-mortem and further action.
The case is being investigated under Section 318 of the Penal Code for concealing the birth of a child by secretly disposing of the body.
Sammy also appealed to anyone with information to contact investigating officer Insp Mohamad Anis Abdullah on 013-636 5734 or report to the nearest police station.
Meanwhile, in Terengganu, a newborn baby girl was found alive after being abandoned at the compound of Masjid Al-Jamhuriah in Kuala Besut early today.
Besut district police chief Supt Mohd Rozaime Ab Rahim said police received information from members of the public at about 5.25am before officers were dispatched to the scene.
He said the baby, believed to have been born within the previous 24 hours, was still attached to her umbilical cord when she was found.
“She was reported to be in good health before being taken to Besut District Hospital for further examination and observation,” he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for exposure and abandonment of a child.
