CAAM issues safety alert for tropical storm Senyar, warning of severe turbulence, low visibility and flight hazards across western and central Peninsular Malaysia.
PUTRAJAYA: The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia has urged all aviation stakeholders to remain vigilant and prioritise safety throughout tropical storm Senyar’s duration.
CAAM chief executive officer Datuk Captain Norazman Mahmud said continuous monitoring of MetMalaysia advisories and strict adherence to CAAM guidance were critical for operational continuity.
He confirmed CAAM issued a safety advisory to flight operators, air traffic controllers and aerodrome managers following the storm’s formation over the Straits of Melaka.
The storm was detected approximately 102 kilometres southwest of Lumut, Perak and is moving east southeast toward Peninsular Malaysia’s western coast at 24 kilometres per hour.
“Such a phenomenon is uncommon in Malaysia due to its equatorial position,” Norazman said in a Safety Information release.
The storm is expected to generate continuous heavy rainfall, strong winds and rough sea conditions affecting western and central regions until November 29.
CAAM cautioned that extreme wind shear, convective activity and intense precipitation could pose serious flight hazards during take-off, approach and landing.
Identified threats include moderate to severe turbulence, microbursts and low visibility requiring Instrument Flight Rules procedures.
Flooding on runways and aprons, potential lightning strikes and disrupted communication systems also present significant risks.
Flight crews and operators must continuously monitor Significant Meteorological Information and Airmen’s Meteorological Information updates.
They should perform pre-flight weather risk assessments and coordinate with dispatch for real-time weather data.
Air traffic controllers have been instructed to provide timely dissemination of Aviation Routine Weather Reports and wind reports.
Aerodrome operators must monitor for flooding, issue Notice to Airmen when necessary and suspend ground handling during lightning events.
