Thailand praises Malaysia’s gig workers bill at UN forum

Thailand congratulates Malaysia on its Gig Workers Bill 2025 at a UN forum, expressing interest in learning from its legal structure for worker protection.

GENEVA: Thailand has praised Malaysia’s enactment of the Gig Workers Bill 2025 during the United Nations Forum on Business and Human Rights.

Nareeluc Pairchaiyapoom, director of the International Human Rights Division at Thailand’s Ministry of Justice, conveyed the congratulations during a discussion session.

She noted Thailand is currently drafting specific legislation to regulate gig workers and expressed interest in learning more about Malaysia’s legal framework.

The Human Resources Ministry (KESUMA) said this recognition reflects regional confidence in Malaysia’s efforts to strengthen worker protection.

KESUMA remains committed to strengthening labour protections and social security for gig workers within the rapidly growing platform work ecosystem.

Malaysia participated in a session titled “Human Rights and Platform Work in Asia-Pacific: Harnessing the Digital Shift” on November 25.

Datuk Dr Puntiha Silivarajoo, deputy director-general of the Legal Affairs Division at the Prime Minister’s Department, served as a panel member.

The session was chaired by Pichamon Yeophantong, chair of the UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights.

Malaysia also shared progress on implementing the National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights 2025-2030.

The plan was launched on August 12, 2025, and includes government commitments to strengthening labour protection for gig workers.
