Two of three teenagers electrocuted at a temple procession in Mergong, Alor Setar, have regained consciousness. A 16-year-old with 80% burns remains unconscious.

ALOR SETAR: Two of the three teenagers who were electrocuted while taking part in a temple procession in Mergong here last night have regained consciousness, while the third remains unconscious.

Kota Setar district police chief ACP Syed Basri Syed Ali said the victims, one aged 16 and the other two aged 17, sustained burns to various parts of their bodies and are receiving treatment at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (HSB).

He said the 16-year-old victim sustained burns to about 80 per cent of his body and remains unconscious.

“The two other victims, both aged 17, who sustained burns on their faces and hands have regained consciousness but remain under hospital observation,” he said in a statement today.

He said two of the victims are school students, while the other works at a motorcycle accessories shop.

Police received a call reporting that three men had been electrocuted while carrying a flag during a procession at 9.20 pm.

He said upon receiving the report, police personnel were dispatched to the scene to conduct an inspection and take further action.

He said one of the victims informed police that the flagpole he was carrying had come into contact with a main electricity supply line, estimated to be 10 metres above the ground, causing him and the two other victims to suffer electric shocks.
