Anwar says no major cabinet reshuffle, only vacancies to be filled

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim rules out a major cabinet reshuffle, stating he will only fill a few vacancies as the government has about 18 months left

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he will focus on filling several vacancies in the Cabinet rather than carrying out a major reshuffle.

Amid calls and speculation over a possible reshuffle, Anwar said current considerations indicate there is no need for sweeping changes.

He noted the MADANI Government now has only about a year and a half left in its term.

“We need to fill a few vacancies, but a major reshuffle normally requires a longer time,” he told reporters after launching Perodua’s first electric vehicle.

“This Cabinet will only function for a little over a year, a year and a half.”

Anwar added that he does not think a major reshuffle should be done but is contemplating what steps to take.

Speculation over a Cabinet reshuffle resurfaced as several ministers are expected to end their service this month.

Their senatorships are expiring, affecting their ministerial positions.

The ministers include Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.

Also affected are Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. – Bernama
