KUCHING: Sarawak has allocated RM350 million for preparations for the 2027 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

State Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the funding covers 17 sporting events and the opening ceremony.

He stated the allocation will fund promotional initiatives, committee training, and sports equipment to meet technical standards set by the Southeast Asian Games Federation.

“Stadium Sarawak will host the 2027 SEA Games Opening Ceremony, highlighting the state’s capability and providing a platform to showcase its culture, unity and progress,” he said.

Abdul Karim added the event is expected to generate long-term socio-economic benefits through tourism and media exposure.

He was speaking during his winding-up speech at the Sarawak State Assembly sitting.

The minister also outlined Sarawak’s ongoing efforts to become a national sports powerhouse.

He said priority sports have been identified and are supported by systematic talent identification in schools and clubs.

The Sarawak Sports Corporation currently operates 290 Sports Development Centres involving 5,983 athletes and 295 coaches.

Abdul Karim noted that 54 Sarawak athletes have been selected to represent Malaysia at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand. – Bernama
