843 illegal immigrants detained in Selayang Baru raid

Selangor authorities detained 843 illegal immigrants in a major Selayang Baru operation for offences like overstaying and document violations

SELAYANG BARU: A total of 843 illegal immigrants were detained in an integrated operation here last night.

Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the individuals were suspected of committing various offences under the Immigration Act.

The detainees comprised 808 men and 35 women aged between 21 and 53.

They were nationals of Indonesia, Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Nepal and Pakistan.

“This operation was carried out after receiving complaints from the community about the influx of foreign workers, including those operating businesses on the side of the road,” said Amirudin, who is also the State Security Committee chairman.

He said intelligence was conducted before the inspection was carried out.

Similar operations had previously been conducted in Seri Muda and the Selangor Wholesale Market.

The operation also led to the arrest of two locals on suspicion of drug abuse.

All those arrested were suspected of not having identification documents, violating pass conditions, overstaying, and using unrecognised cards.

They were taken to the Semenyih Immigration Depot for further investigation.

Amirudin commented that low rental costs attracting foreigners to the area was driven by demand, supply, and proximity to the city centre.

He said the operation would continue to detect, arrest, prosecute, and deport foreigners who violate the law.

The Menteri Besar also issued a warning to employers to use legal channels when hiring foreign workers.

The operation involved 358 members from various security agencies including the Immigration Department, police, and armed forces. – Bernama
