Melaka and MCMC sign MoU to boost smart city development

MCMC and Melaka state government sign MoU to enhance smart city initiatives, focusing on connectivity, public safety and digital economy growth.

MELAKA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Melaka state government have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen strategic cooperation on the Melaka Smart City Initiative.

The cooperation aligns with the implementation of the Melaka Smart Blueprint 2035, the main guide for the state’s digital transformation towards sustainable and resilient development by 2035.

The MoU covers expanding smart connectivity infrastructure, including high-speed public Wi-Fi, future-ready fibre networks and the installation of smart poles for comprehensive coverage.

It also includes efforts to strengthen public safety, traffic management and smart tourism through a Network Operation and Command Centre for integrated implementation.

“The implementation of this cooperation is expected to have a positive impact on the people through the expansion of access to high-speed public Wi-Fi, more efficient digital service delivery, smoother traffic management, and reduction of disaster risk,” a joint statement said.

The MoU exchange involved MCMC Chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din and Melaka State Secretary Datuk Azhar Arshad.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh witnessed the ceremony.

The effort will stimulate local digital economic development by strengthening tourism, retail, logistics and the SME sectors.

This is expected to create a more conducive environment for investment in the state.

The cooperation provides the necessary smart city infrastructure foundation for Melaka’s long-term digital transformation.

It aims to solidify Melaka’s position as a competitive smart state on the international stage.

“MCMC is committed to continuing to work closely with the Melaka state government to successfully implement the national digital agenda,” the statement added.

The commission aims to ensure smart city development is inclusive, sustainable and beneficial to all levels of society.
