Sabah’s 2026 budget targets rural infrastructure and welfare

The RM6.4 billion Sabah budget for 2026 prioritises water, electricity and road issues in rural areas while projecting a RM28 million surplus.

KOTA KINABALU: The 2026 Sabah Budget will focus on resolving long-standing basic infrastructure issues, particularly in rural areas.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the budget’s key commitment is to solve problems with water supply, electricity, and roads to ensure public welfare.

“This is what we will implement next year,” he told reporters after the budget tabling at the State Legislative Assembly.

He added that issues concerning water, electricity, and roads in rural areas will be given priority.

Hajiji stated that human capital development will remain a core priority, supported by aid for Sabahan children pursuing education.

The less fortunate will also continue receiving assistance under the budget themed ‘Driving Development, Prioritising People’s Well-being’.

The Sabah government tabled a RM6.402 billion budget for the coming year.

It projects revenue of RM6.43 billion, resulting in a surplus of RM28 million.

Deputy Chief Minister II Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, who is also the state Finance Minister, tabled the budget.

Masidi highlighted that the budget was formulated through extensive engagement sessions with state ministries and departments.

It incorporates various economic indicators and accounts for anticipated global economic uncertainty.

The budget also considers new programmes for the first year of the 13th Malaysia Plan.

Sabah Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Environment Datuk Jafry Ariffin said the budget shows the state’s commitment to strengthening his sectors.

He said it supports the growth of tourism, culture, and the environment while reflecting a commitment to sustainable development.

“I am confident that with effective execution and the cooperation of all stakeholders, these sectors will continue to thrive,” Jafry added.

He said the resulting economic benefits will directly reach the people, from rural communities to industry leaders.
