Sarawak to Peninsular power link awaits feasibility study, says minister

Deputy PM Fadillah says the Sarawak-Peninsular Malaysia electricity supply project is still in the policy and technical study phase.

KUCHING: The proposal to supply electricity from Sarawak to Peninsular Malaysia is still in the policy and technical study phase.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof said the project has received in-principle approval but requires detailed studies before a feasibility assessment.

“At present, it remains at the policy stage,” said Fadillah, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation.

He stated that technical studies, including surveys involving Indonesia, must be completed first.

“We expect the feasibility study to be carried out next year,” he told reporters after a Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) community programme.

Fadillah said the project is expected to involve key parties like TNB, Petronas, and Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB).

He added that the tariff has not been determined and depends on the study outcomes and negotiations between TNB and SEB.

Previous reports stated Sarawak agreed in principle to supply 1,000 megawatts of green energy each to Singapore and Peninsular Malaysia.

The cross-border energy cooperation falls under projects within the ASEAN Power Grid initiative. – Bernama
