Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim calls for a more effective government communication machinery, acknowledging current limitations and mistakes
PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has emphasised the need to further strengthen the government’s communication machinery.
He made the remarks during a briefing session with editors-in-chief of local and international media at his office.
Anwar said he had reminded Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil of the importance of improving these efforts.
“We need a great deal of courage and, of course, effective communication,” he said.
“The major criticism is that our communication team is not that strong.”
He acknowledged that the administration constantly strives to do its best but has limitations and perhaps makes mistakes.
The Prime Minister stressed that the media could advise the government on delivering more effective communication.
He clarified that the objective was not to engage in propaganda.
“It is not a propaganda machinery, just telling what is actually at stake in this country,” Anwar said.
“What we are doing, and possibly even our limitations and what we have not done.”
He added that improving communication was critically important for the nation’s fabric.
“It is not just a matter of facing elections, but more critically the fabric of this nation,” he stated.
“Because whatever is being done, if you want to be a national party working with the people and you must be able to express it.”
On a separate matter, Anwar said it was important for all Malaysians to enhance their proficiency in the Malay language.
The session was also attended by Bernama’s Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj.
