Senior Ukrainian diplomat holds rare talks in Beijing with Chinese officials

Ukraine’s first deputy foreign minister Sergiy Kyslytsya is in Beijing for consultations, a rare diplomatic meeting amid China’s close ties with Russia.

BEIJING: A senior Ukrainian diplomat has arrived in Beijing for talks with Chinese officials.

Ukraine’s First Deputy Foreign Minister Sergiy Kyslytsya announced the visit on social media on Thursday.

“Busy day ahead in Beijing,” Kyslytsya wrote.

A Ukrainian foreign ministry spokesman confirmed to AFP that Kyslytsya would hold consultations with Chinese diplomats.

The spokesman did not provide further details about the agenda.

Kyslytsya also said he was meeting with US ambassador to China David Perdue.

The visit represents a rare high-level meeting between officials from Kyiv and Beijing.

China is a close ally and major trading partner of Russia.

Beijing says it maintains a neutral stance on the war and has never condemned Moscow’s invasion.

Chinese officials regularly call for peace talks and respect for territorial integrity.

Western governments accuse China of providing Russia with crucial economic support.

This support allegedly includes supplying military components for Russia’s defence industry.
