Melaka’s Hang Tuah Jaya council drafts new local plan with public feedback

MPHTJ allocates RM2 million for a new local plan guiding development to 2035, now open for public proposals until December 31.

MELAKA: The Hang Tuah Jaya Municipal Council (MPHTJ) has allocated RM2 million to prepare a draft local plan to guide the town’s development up to 2035.

State Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change and Disaster Management Committee chairman Datuk Rais Yasin said the funding came from the Ministry of Housing and Local Government via PLANMalaysia.

He said this strategic document will be the main reference for MPHTJ’s development over the next 10 to 15 years.

“The last draft local plan for MPHTJ was prepared 20 years ago, making this review crucial as it will replace the existing plan,” Rais told reporters.

He launched a public participation programme inviting residents to submit proposals or objections to the draft MPHTJ Local Plan 2035.

The plan is open for public feedback until December 31.

It outlines six development thrusts with 33 strategies and 281 components covering resources, the economy, and urban liveability.

The draft also identifies 42 ‘quick-win’ projects for short-term implementation to benefit residents immediately.

In a separate development, Rais said the state government plans to elevate MPHTJ to city status.

He noted that federal requirements include a minimum population of 500,000 within the council’s area.

MPHTJ currently has an estimated population of about 200,000.

“We will request the federal government to consider relaxing the existing condition,” Rais said, citing MPHTJ’s high revenue collection. – Bernama
