Amendments to the FINAS Act aim to enhance governance, protect creative workers, and boost the competitiveness of Malaysia’s film industry.
KUALA LUMPUR: Amendments to the Malaysian National Film Development Corporation (FINAS) Act 1981 are set to strengthen governance and regulation of the film industry.
The Malaysian Film Producers Association (PFM) stated the legal changes will better protect the rights and welfare of creative practitioners.
PFM Chief Executive Officer and Honorary Secretary Zahrin Aris said the amendments will also reinforce FINAS’s role as a key driver in local content development.
He said the changes are expected to create a more structured, transparent and professional industry environment.
“PFM views this amendment as a catalyst for the growth of the creative economy,“ Zahrin said in a statement.
He said it will stimulate investment, expand job opportunities and strengthen the global competitiveness of Malaysian content.
Zahrin congratulated Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and FINAS on the Bill’s passing in the Dewan Negara.
He described the legislative update as a significant milestone for the nation’s film industry history.
The amendments align with the evolving needs of a dynamic and increasingly competitive regional and international landscape.
They also reflect the government’s commitment to keeping the industry relevant and adaptable to technological change.
Zahrin added that PFM is committed to working with the Ministry of Communications, FINAS and all stakeholders.
He expressed confidence that strong collaboration will build a more sustainable and internationally competitive film ecosystem.
