‘Back to the Past’ Hong Kong epic hits cinemas Dec 31

Louis Koo’s time-travel blockbuster sequel opens Malaysia Dec 31 with original cast after 20+ years

MORE than two decades after captivating audiences across Asia, the beloved universe of A Step into the Past is making its big-screen debut with an official feature-film sequel that reunites the original cast for an epic conclusion.

Back to the Past (尋秦記) will open in Malaysian cinemas on December 31, launching simultaneously with China and Hong Kong in a day-and-date worldwide release that marks the year-end entertainment calendar.

Star-Studded Return of Original Cast

Produced by Louis Koo and helmed by directors Ng Yuen Fai and Jack Lai, the film brings together the complete ensemble that made the 2001 television drama a cultural phenomenon throughout the region.

Louis Koo reprises his role as Hong Siu-lung, joined by Raymond Lam as King Qin/Chiu Poon, Jessica Hsuan as Wu Ting-fong, Sonija Kwok as Kam Ching, and Joyce Tang as Sin Yau. The reunion comes after more than 20 years since viewers first followed their adventures through time.

Adding gravitas to the production, legendary action choreographer Sammo Hung Kam Po has designed the film’s action sequences, promising spectacular martial arts sequences befitting the franchise’s legacy.

The return of the iconic theme song “Destiny” (天命最高) further amplifies the nostalgia factor, transporting longtime fans back to the emotional journey that began over two decades ago.

New Trailer and Posters Reveal Epic Confrontation

The recently released first official trailer and three final posters showcase a narrative that spans time, loyalty, and destiny against the historical backdrop of Qin’s unification of the six states.

The footage reveals Hong Siu-lung’s quiet life in hiding shattered when Chiu Poon’s growing ambition and absolute power threaten to pull him back into ancient political turmoil. Faced with unresolved emotions and questions of loyalty, Siu-lung must confront the past he once attempted to escape.

Three Striking Final Posters

The marketing materials present distinct visual themes:

The dual character poster positions Hong Siu-lung and King Qin side by side against imposing terracotta warriors and swirling sands of time, suggesting the tension between loyalty, power, and potential betrayal that will drive their inevitable confrontation.

Hong Siu-lung’s individual poster presents a striking visual contrast, showing Louis Koo in modern tactical gear amid an ancient battlefield—a powerful representation of a warrior caught between two worlds, unable to escape his destiny despite defying time itself.

King Qin’s poster captures Raymond Lam enthroned with sword in hand, radiating the authority and ruthlessness of a ruler transformed by absolute power, suggesting the dangerous evolution from young monarch to sovereign poised to unify the ancient world.

Expanding the Universe

Beyond the returning favourites, the trailer introduces significant new characters, notably Hang Po-yee played by Angus Zhu. Previously appearing only as a child in the television series, the character has been reimagined as a young warrior destined to become the legendary Xiang Yu, signalling the narrative’s expansion into a broader historical canvas.

Additional new characters are expected to be revealed as the release date approaches.

Legacy of a Beloved Franchise

Adapted from the best-selling novel by renowned author Wong Yi, the property has maintained a devoted following throughout China, Hong Kong, and Southeast Asia for more than two decades.

The film promises upgraded visuals, large-scale battle sequences, and expanded character arcs that bridge nostalgia with an entirely new chapter, offering both longtime fans and new audiences a cinematic experience that honours the franchise’s legacy whilst pushing it forward.

Central questions drive the narrative: Will Hong Siu-lung resolve his complicated relationship with Chiu Poon? And can he finally return to the modern world? The answers await audiences exclusively in cinemas.
