Sarawak police gear up for Christmas and monsoon season

Sarawak police deploy 700 personnel for road safety while maintaining full readiness for the Northeast Monsoon season, as fatal accidents rise by 19 cases.

KUCHING: The Sarawak Police Contingent is deploying 700 personnel for a six-day Road Safety Advocacy Campaign starting tomorrow.

Deputy Police Commissioner DCP Saifullizan Ishak said this will not affect the force’s preparations for the Northeast Monsoon season.

He stated that early planning has allowed personnel assignments to be distributed in stages without compromising disaster readiness.

“The assignments for the advocacy programme and other initiatives do not interfere with our MTL preparations because planning was done well in advance,” he told reporters.

He added that all assigned personnel remain on high alert for the monsoon, including for logistics and monitoring flood-prone areas.

Saifullizan noted that conditions in Sarawak remain under control with no current flooding reports.

Police continue to monitor the situation, especially in known flood “hotspots.”

Meanwhile, he revealed that fatal accidents in the state increased by 19 cases from January to November this year.

A total of 348 fatal accidents were recorded, compared to the same period last year.

“The primary cause of accidents – accounting for 80% – is driver negligence,” he said.

This is followed by an increase in the number of vehicles (30%) and factors like weather and road conditions (5%).

Saifullizan spoke after attending a programme to distribute free helmets donated by the Social Security Organisation to motorcyclists.
