DBKL: Festivities no excuse for littering streets

City Hall appeals for responsible behaviour after rubbish found scattered across Bukit Bintang area

PETALING JAYA: Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has called on the public to maintain cleanliness during festive celebrations, after images revealed significant littering in the Bukit Bintang area despite ongoing cleanup operations.

In a Facebook post, the local authority highlighted that while most residents and visitors respect public spaces, a minority continues to discard rubbish irresponsibly, damaging the city’s reputation and appearance.

DBKL disclosed that cleaning crews have been deployed across the city centre to ensure the environment remains hygienic, organized, and pleasant for everyone.

“Even as the public enjoys the festive night atmosphere, the responsibility to maintain cleanliness must remain a priority,” the authority stated.

The images shared by DBKL contrast ongoing cleanup work with scenes of litter scattered across popular areas, illustrating the challenge faced by sanitation teams during the busy holiday season.

City Hall emphasised that maintaining Kuala Lumpur’s cleanliness is a shared responsibility requiring participation from all who use public spaces.

The authority urged residents and visitors to refrain from littering, utilize the rubbish bins positioned throughout the city, and treat public areas with care and respect.

“Responsible behaviour by every individual can have a significant impact on keeping the city clean,” DBKL stressed.

The appeal comes during the height of the festive season, when Bukit Bintang and surrounding areas experience heightened foot traffic from locals and tourists drawn to holiday decorations, shopping districts, and entertainment venues.

While the increased activity brings economic benefits and festive cheer, it also places additional pressure on municipal sanitation services, particularly when some individuals fail to dispose of their waste properly.

DBKL’s statement underscores concerns that littering undermines efforts to position Kuala Lumpur as a world-class city destination. The capital’s appearance and hygiene standards directly affect tourism appeal, resident quality of life, and overall urban livability.

City authorities regularly face the challenge of balancing accessibility to public spaces with maintaining cleanliness standards, particularly during peak periods such as festivals, public holidays, and major events.

The appeal reflects broader efforts by Malaysian local authorities to cultivate civic consciousness and encourage residents to take ownership of their environment.

Public cleanliness campaigns have increasingly emphasized that maintaining attractive, hygienic urban spaces requires collective effort rather than relying solely on sanitation workers.

DBKL’s message serves as a reminder that festive enjoyment and environmental responsibility are not mutually exclusive—both can coexist when individuals make conscious choices about waste disposal.

As holiday celebrations continue, the authority hopes the appeal will encourage more thoughtful behaviour from those enjoying Kuala Lumpur’s festive atmosphere, ensuring the city remains welcoming and clean for all.
