Professional pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin will train twice weekly with the national squad to boost sparring quality ahead of the Malaysia Open.
KUALA LUMPUR: Professional men’s doubles pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Mohd Rumsani will train with the national team ahead of the Malaysia Open starting January 6.
National men’s doubles head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi said the pair will join training sessions twice a week to improve sparring quality.
He said the arrangement benefits both the national squad and the independent players.
“Yesterday, coach Rexy texted me on the independent players joining training, twice in one week,” Herry said.
“I said yes, please do, it is indeed timely to prepare for Malaysia Open.”
He suggested independent players might find their own sparring less intensive.
“So they join here. It’s also all about being together, it’s good,” he told reporters after a training session at Badminton Academy Malaysia.
Herry believes training with professional pairs creates healthy competition.
“In my opinion, sparring with independents is on the same level because they (the national men’s doubles) are both at the top,” he said.
“So I think that would be better.”
He clarified the current arrangement is short-term and focused on the upcoming tournament.
“For the short term, this may be to prepare for the Malaysia Open,” Herry said.
“But there was no discussion yet about the Thomas Cup.”
