Penang Hill funicular service resumes after power disruption

Penang Hill funicular service was disrupted by a power distribution issue but has resumed after safety protocols and repairs were completed.

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Hill funicular train service has resumed normal operations following a temporary disruption caused by a power distribution problem.

Penang Hill Corporation (PBBPP) stated the issue began yesterday afternoon and was triggered by a foreign object affecting the motor drive.

The incident activated built-in safety mechanisms, causing the funicular to automatically operate at reduced speeds to transport visitors.

Essential services were completely shut down to allow for the replacement of the affected high-voltage power unit.

Visitor safety was prioritised, with immediate transportation provided using both funicular cars at reduced speeds and a jeep service.

The technical teams conducted a thorough inspection of the system following the shutdown.

PBBPP confirmed the funicular service resumed normal operations at 6.30 pm yesterday.

The corporation apologised for any inconvenience caused and appreciated the patience of visitors and stakeholders.

It also expressed gratitude to all parties for their assistance during the incident.

“PBBPP is committed to maintaining the highest safety and operational excellence standards for all visitors to Penang Hill,” added the statement.
