Flood situation in Terengganu improves as evacuee numbers fall

Flood conditions in Terengganu show improvement with evacuee numbers dropping to 138, down from 419, as relief centres remain open in two locations

KUALA TERENGGANU: The flood situation in Terengganu is improving, with the number of evacuees dropping significantly.

As of this morning, 138 people from 35 families were sheltering at relief centres, down from 419 people from 107 families recorded yesterday evening.

According to the Terengganu State Disaster Management Committee secretariat, 78 people from 20 families are still housed at two relief centres.

These are Sekolah Kebangsaan Tok Jembal and SK Kompleks Mengabang Telipot.

In Kuala Terengganu, 60 people from 15 families remain at SK Chendering.

They have been sheltering there since December 26 following heavy rains and high tides.

The National Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre had earlier warned of potential flooding in five districts.

The advisory for Besut, Hulu Terengganu, Kemaman, Setiu and Dungun was in effect from December 27 to 30.

The public is still advised to remain cautious and follow authorities’ instructions.

They should also be prepared for possible evacuation if necessary.

Rain is forecast throughout Terengganu today, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department’s official website.
