Police arrest 13 over violent restaurant brawl in Johor Bahru

Johor police detain 12 men and a Vietnamese woman after a riot involving weapons at a Taman Mount Austin restaurant, with one victim injured.

JOHOR BAHRU: Police have arrested 13 individuals following a violent riot at a restaurant in Taman Mount Austin.

Twelve local men and a Vietnamese woman were detained in connection with the early morning attack yesterday.

Johor Bahru Selatan police chief ACP Raub Selamat said the incident occurred around 3 am.

Two local men, both aged 27, were attacked by a group of men aged between 20 and 40.

“The victims were attacked with metal chairs and meat cleavers, leaving one of them with injuries to the head, arm and calf, as well as scratches on the body,” he said in a statement.

He said the incident, which also went viral on social media, is believed to have stemmed from a misunderstanding related to personal debt.

All 13 suspects were arrested between 3 am on the same day and 12.40 am last night at several locations in the district.

Police are currently tracking down other suspects believed to be involved in the case.

Investigators have seized seven mobile phones, a knife, and clothing used during the incident.

Seven of the suspects arrested have prior criminal and drug-related records, while six tested positive for ketamine.

The 12 male suspects have been remanded for seven days, while the Vietnamese woman has been remanded for three days, starting today.
