Trump defends his health and cognitive skills amid scrutiny

US President Donald Trump asserts his ‘perfect health’ and top cognitive test scores, countering concerns over his fitness for office.

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has again defended his physical and mental fitness for office. He made the assertions one day after an interview addressing scrutiny over his well-being was published.

“The White House Doctors have just reported that I am in ‘PERFECT HEALTH,’ and that I ‘ACED’ (Meaning, was correct on 100% of the questions asked!), for the third straight time, my Cognitive Examination,” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform. He added that no other president or vice president had been willing to take such a test.

In the interview with The Wall Street Journal, the 79-year-old president addressed visible signs that have raised questions. He blamed aspirin for large bruises on his hand and denied falling asleep during televised meetings.

Trump also corrected a previous statement, clarifying he received a CT scan in October, not an MRI. His political image has long been built on projecting vigor through constant media engagement and social media activity.

However, his second term’s first year has drawn increasing attention to his condition. Persistent bruising on his right hand is often covered with makeup or a bandage, and his ankles have appeared swollen at times.

He has also been seen struggling to keep his eyes open during official meetings. Trump told the Journal he was not dozing but simply relaxing. “I’ll just close. It’s very relaxing to me,” he said.

In his online post, Trump argued that all presidential and vice presidential candidates should be required to take a cognitive exam. “Our great Country cannot be run by ‘STUPID’ or INCOMPETENT PEOPLE!” he wrote.

The comment was seen as a swipe at his predecessor, Joe Biden. Biden, the oldest president in US history, dropped out of the 2024 race after a debate performance that fueled concerns about his age.
