Liverpool manager Arne Slot admits his team’s Premier League campaign has been a constant battle, with the title race looking like a duel between Arsenal and Man City.
LIVERPOOL: Liverpool manager Arne Slot has described the first half of his team’s season as a “constant battle”.
Slot admitted the Premier League title race now appears to be a duel between Arsenal and Manchester City, with his defending champions 12 points off the pace.
The Reds are fourth in the table, eight points behind City and six behind third-placed Aston Villa.
This follows a recovery from a terrible run of nine defeats in 12 matches across all competitions starting in late September.
“Realistically those two teams (Arsenal and City) are quite far away from us and we should not look at those two at this moment in time,” said Slot.
He said his team’s current seven-game unbeaten league run did not mean they were “flying through the league”.
Slot added that every game remained hard work for a team that is usually better than its opponent, “but not enough”.
The manager believes fourth place is a fair reflection of Liverpool’s season so far, despite small margins costing them points.
“That we are so many points behind them, there are reasons for that but it wouldn’t be fair if we were above them for the way we have played,” he said ahead of Sunday’s trip to Fulham.
Liverpool struggled to impose themselves in a 0-0 draw with Leeds at Anfield on Thursday despite dominating possession.
Slot noted his team now hardly concedes chances.
“It is also clear and obvious that we find it quite hard to generate enough chances for all the ball possession we have and that is not new for us this season,” he added.
