A 67-year-old woman died after being hit by an SUV driven by a foreign man suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol in Tanjung Tokong, Penang
GEORGE TOWN: An elderly woman was killed after being hit by a sports utility vehicle (SUV) driven by a foreign man suspected of being under the influence of alcohol.
The 67-year-old victim was crossing the road at Jalan Lembah Permai in Tanjung Tokong late last night.
Northeast District Police chief ACP Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the incident occurred at about 11.30pm.
The victim was thrown onto the road and pronounced dead at the scene.
Initial investigations suggest the accident happened as the 51-year-old man was driving the SUV from Jalan Mount Erskine towards Jalan Tanjung Bungah.
“Upon arriving at the scene, the SUV hit a pedestrian who was crossing from left to right. As a result, the pedestrian was thrown onto the road and died at the scene,” he said in a statement today.
Abdul Rozak said the SUV driver is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol, exceeding the permitted limit, based on a screening test.
Police have detained the man and will apply for a remand order to facilitate further investigation under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
