Cellular services restored in Pulau Tioman’s Kampung Salang

CelcomDigi restores mobile network in Kampung Salang after storm damage, with MCMC coordinating support during monsoon season

KUANTAN: Cellular services in Kampung Salang, Pulau Tioman, have been fully restored.

Telecommunications companies completed the restoration work on January 1, according to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

The commission stated that CelcomDigi could only reach the island on December 31 to replace damaged equipment due to safety concerns and limited ferry services during the Northeast Monsoon season.

“MCMC will continue to collaborate with related agencies, such as the Fire and Rescue Department and the Civil Defence Force, to assist service providers with transportation and logistical support, especially during the MTL season,” the statement said.

The disruption began on December 17 after a transmission station managed by CelcomDigi was severely damaged.

The station used Multi-Operator Core Network technology, causing service outages for CelcomDigi, Maxis, and U Mobile customers in the area.

MCMC confirmed that Unifi broadband services continued to operate normally throughout the incident.

The commission had received complaints from local representatives and villagers about the loss of 2G and 4G services, which affected nearly 100 residents.

Overall, there are nine transmission stations on Pulau Tioman, with all others functioning well except for the one in Kampung Salang.
